President Hughes Named Chair Of CCAA Leadership
Group
Dr. Marvalene Hughes, President of California State University, Stanislaus,
has been named Chair of the California Collegiate Athletic Association
(CCAA) Presidents/Chancellors Group that governs all organization policy
issues.
Joining her in the conference leadership ranks is Dr. Milton Richards,
CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics, who was named President of the
CCAA Executive Council. CSU Stanislaus is the 2002-2003 host institution
for conference events.
President Hughes, selected as Chair by presidents and chancellors of
the CCAA member institutions, will serve a one-year term. The Presidents/Chancellors
Group handles all final policy decisions for the conference.
“My involvement in the CCAA affords me the perfect opportunity
to ensure that student athletes are treated fairly and that they honor
their academic responsibilities,” said President Hughes, a longtime
advocate for students and student athletes.
CCAA members, in addition to CSU Stanislaus, include Cal Poly Pomona,
Chico State, Sonoma State, San Francisco State, CSU Dominguez Hills,
CSU Bakersfield, CSU Los Angeles, UC San Diego, UC Davis, and Grand
Canyon College in Arizona.
Dr. Hughes is in her ninth year as CSU Stanislaus President. In January
2000, she completed a four-year term as a nationally elected member
of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council, where she introduced legislation
to transform old practices and tighten standards for presidential involvement.
During that time, she also served as Presidents Council Liaison to student
athletes, and developed a strong NCAA Student Advisory Committee, which
still exists. She was a member of the NCAA Division II Budget and Finance
Committee for three years.
