Campus: Cal Poly Pomona -- July 26, 2002
Capt. Randal Quan Of The Los Angeles Police Department
Named Cal Poly Pomona's New Chief Of Police
Randal Quan, the first Chinese-American captain in the history of the
Los Angeles Police Department, has been named Cal Poly Pomona’s
new chief of police effective Oct. 1.
At Cal Poly Pomona, Quan will fill the role of current Chief of Police
Kim Plater, who is retiring after 12 years of distinguished service
at the university. Quan will oversee the safety and security needs of
the campus, which include supervision of police, emergency preparedness,
dispatch services, and the administration of several regional and federal
grant programs.
“There’s no way for me to replace Kim Plater,” said
Quan, a resident of Walnut. “She has a terrific work ethic and
a huge heart. I’ll make every effort to fill the void she’ll
leave, but it will be difficult for anyone to fill. I see this as a
tremendous opportunity, and I’m looking forward to providing a
safe environment for the community to continue their education and do
their work.”
A seasoned law enforcement administrator with more than 25 years of
experience, Quan currently serves as commanding officer of 335 sworn
and civilian employees of the Los Angeles Police Department’s
Jail Division.
Quan initially joined the Los Angeles Police Department as a reserve
police officer in 1975. He entered the Police Academy as a recruit officer
in 1976 and graduated first in his class. He also holds a juris doctorate
from Southwest University of Law and a bachelor’s degree in criminal
justice from Cal State Los Angeles.
“Randal Quan is a seasoned law enforcement professional and will
be an exceptional addition to our team,” said Tomas Morales, vice
president for Student Affairs. “His wide range of experience should
prove to be of great value and we are delighted that he will be joining
the Cal Poly Pomona family.”
