California State University, Long Beach Will Host
2003 NCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship
The City of Long Beach and California State University, Long Beach have been
awarded the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Volleyball National Championship, which
will be held on May 1st and 3rd at The Pyramid. The NCAA Division I Men's
Volleyball Committee made the final approval this week.
"Given Cal State Long Beach's tremendous tradition in the sport of
volleyball we are honored to once again host the NCAA Men's Volleyball
Championships," said 49er Director of Athletics Bill Shumard. "The
Committee was extremely impressed with how we ran the 2001 Championship and
rewarded us by accepting our bid to host the 2003 Championship.
"With Long Beach hosting the NCAA Division I Women's National Championship
in December of 2004, the City of Long Beach and Cal State Long Beach have
solidified its reputation as a hotbed for collegiate volleyball," Shumard
added. "We once again anticipate huge fan interest here in Southern
California and plan on hosting a first-class event."
Semifinal action will take place on Thursday, May 1 with game times at 6:00 and
8:00 pm Pacific Time. Saturday's national championship match will begin at
4:00 pm.
CSULB hosted the 2001 Men's Volleyball Championship, serving as host to BYU,
UCLA, Penn State and Ohio State. BYU won the 2001 title with a three-game sweep
over UCLA.
