Cal Poly Releases Census Statistics on Fall Enrollment
Cal Poly's student body is younger than those at other California
State University campuses, has more male students than female, and almost
all of its students come from California -- with the San Francisco Bay
Area sending the university its biggest batch of students.
Those are just a few of the demographic facts available in the latest
PolyView analysis, now available on-line at http://www.calpoly.edu/~inststdy.
PolyView is a quarterly analysis of student data compiled by the university's
Institutional Planning and Analysis department.
Among the findings in the fall quarter 2001 PolyView:
- Some 95 percent of Cal Poly students are California residents.
- Some 24 percent of Cal Poly students are originally from the San
Francisco Bay Area; 19 percent are from the Central Coast; 16 percent
are from the Los Angeles area; 14 percent are from the Central Valley;
and 6 percent are from the San Diego area.
- The university's top "feeder" high schools are: public,
San Luis Obispo High School, Arroyo Grande High School, Atascadero
High School, Poway High School, Amador Valley High School (Pleasanton);
private, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), St. Francis High School (Mountain
View), Jesuit High School (Carmichael), Bellarmine College Prep (San
Jose), Santa Margarita High School (Rancho Santa Margarita).
- Cal Poly's top "feeder" community colleges are: Cuesta
College, Allan Hancock College, De Anza College, Diablo Valley College,
and Bakersfield College.
- Cal Poly's current freshman class has an average high school GPA
of 3.64 and a SAT average of 1169.
- Cal Poly has more male students (54.7 percent) than female (45.3
- Cal Poly students are slightly younger, on average, than at other
California State University campuses. The average age of undergraduate
students at Cal Poly is 21.6 years. The average age for undergraduates
in the entire CSU system is 24.1.
