CSUB Campaigns Against Domestic Violence

A month-long campaign to raise public awareness and promote education about domestic violence was launched today at California State University, Bakersfield. Nada York, president of the Domestic Violence Advisory Council of Kern County talked, kicked off the campaign with a discussion about domestic violence, its impact, treatment, and prevention, at Runner Park at 10 a.m. Monday.

The campaign continues with a discussion by an attorney and a law enforcement officer who will talk about law enforcement response to domestic violence Friday, Oct. 5, in Dorothy Donahoe Hall, Room K 107, at noon. Cindy Norris, from the Kern County District Attorney's Office, and Sgt. Michael Morris, CSUB Public Safety, are scheduled speakers.

The Alliance Against Family Violence hosts Dog Daze Run 2001 Saturday, Oct. 6 at Minter Field Airport in Shafter, with registration beginning at 7:45 a.m. and the walk beginning at 9 a.m. Proceeds will support the campaign. The group also hosts a barbecue Oct. 12 at Centennial Garden Plaza, 1001 Truxtun Ave., in Bakersfield, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A mental health perspective on domestic violence will be discussed Oct. 11 in Nursing Building 102, 1:30 p.m. Sharon Brandon, Kern County Mental Health Department, will lead the discussion.

A discussion of sexual abuse in the context of dating will take place Oct. 17 in the Commons at CSUB, 7 p.m. A discussion of female abuse will be addressed Oct. 23 at Dorothy Donahoe Hall, Room J 100, noon.

The campaign concludes Oct. 29 with a candlelight ceremony at Runner Park, 5 p.m.
