Cal Poly Pomona Student Reaches Semifinals In Competition To Become Cohost Of "Live! With Regis And Kelly" For A Day

Cal Poly Pomona senior Karla Alatorre always knew she wanted to be on television, but she never imagined her big break could come so soon. Alatorre is one of 10 semifinalists competing for five spots as co-host on the "Live! with Regis and Kelly" morning talk show.

"I can't believe I made it to the top ten," she said. "My roommate called me at work to tell me and she was screaming, so I started screaming. I'm just so happy I made it this far."

Alatorre, a 22-year-old Calexico resident, is majoring in communication at Cal Poly Pomona.

Thousands of students from across the country entered the competition by submitting a one-page letter and two-minute video explaining why they deserve to co-host a show with Regis Philbin. The top 10 videos, including Alatorre's, were aired during Tuesday morning's program and can also be viewed on the "Live! with Regis and Kelly" web site at The show's followers will help choose the finalists by voting online. Votes will be accepted until Wednesday, June 6, at 9 p.m. (pacific time).

Philbin will announce the top five students on the air Friday, June 8. The five finalists will each co-host one show beginning Monday, June 11, while regular co-host Kelly Ripa is on maternity leave.
