At this year's PSE convention, students participated in several competitions and attended numerous seminars. The Phi Chapter competed in the following competitions: Top Marketing Research Project, the Challenger Award, and National Speakers Competition as well as Special Events and Pro/Am Sell-a-Thon of which Cal State L.A. placed first. Cal State L.A.'s Phi Chapter members participating were: Anne Vong, Alhambra; Stacy Lee, Alhambra; Dawn Sison, Glendale; Mike Cho, South Pasadena; Edmond-Ho Wong, Alhambra; Katie Mac, Baldwin Park; Craig White, Burbank; and Ronald Yee, Los Angeles. Dawn Sison, Marketing Management major from Glendale, was the winner of the Pro/Am Sell-a-Thon. This is a role-play sales-call competition in which participants are evaluated on their ability to address the various sales steps and to complete the sale. She also did a presentation for the National Speakers Competition on "Candles" and their safety. The National Speakers competition had 10 entries and was extremely competitive. Cal State L.A.'s Phi Chapter won the Special Events competition that was presented to all conference attendees in which twelve other chapters also competed. The Phi Chapter's multi-media presentation reflected and highlighted efforts of a service project done at Christmas time for the California Hospital Medical Center, a children's hospital in Los Angeles. Cal State L.A.'s Phi Chapter was highlighted on the front of the hospital's newsletter for these efforts. Ann Vong (Marketing Management major), Stacy Lee (Marketing Management major), Mike Cho (International Business major) and Edmond-Ho Wong (Accounting major) made up the Special Events presentation team. Special Events is a multi-media presentation integrating music, sound effects, and a live narrative event done to motivate chapters to give back to their community and society as a whole as well as giving them experience in developing presentations for corporate business, marketing and sales meetings. Some of the other competing chapters in this category were from: Arizona State University; University of Hawaii, Manoa; University of Wisconsin, Whitewater; Louisiana State University; Miami University, Ohio; and Virginia Tech University. Cal State L.A.'s Phi Chapter has won the following awards in the past few years: 1997, National Speakers Competition, Jennifer Truong for a presentation "Happiness" Several years Phi Chapter has also won the Top Pi Sigma Epsilon Region (Western) Award. The Phi Chapter members have received the following scholarships from PSE national headquarters: 1997 Pro/Am Sale-A-Thon Scholarship for convention registration, travel reimbursement and other conference amenities to Jennifer Troung (Marketing major) Shirley Stretch-Stephenson and Rika Houston serve as Cal State L.A. faculty advisors. Stretch attended the convention with the students and was appointed to the Mu Kappa Tau, a Marketing Honorary board of directors during the convention. Fifth plus four-year universities across the United States and Puerto Rico attended the convention. PSE is a national co-educational organization created to advance sales and marketing education. |
