Cal Poly Sweeps Regional Scholastic Competition

A team of Cal Poly food science students won the recent Western Division Institute of Food Technologists' College Bowl Scholastic Competition.

The competition, hosted for the third consecutive year by Cal Poly, brought together six teams from the IFT's West Coast region.

During the College Bowl, which is based on the same principle as many game shows, the first team to "hit the buzzer" has the opportunity to answer questions ranging from sanitation and food chemistry to enology, microbiology, nutrition and food processing.

Competitors came from UC Davis, Washington State, Utah State, Brigham Young and Chapman universities.

The event included guest speakers from industry and government, who also served as moderator and judges for the event.

As Western Division champions, the Cal Poly students will compete in the national competition June 25 in New Orleans.
