California State University, Bakersfield debaters Jeremy Peterson and David Wells defeated CSU Chico, CSU Fullerton and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo enroute to a 4-2 record this past weekend at the District I Debate Tournament.
Peterson's and Wells' success qualified them for a second year in a row to the National Debate Tournament, "the most competitive and highly regarded college debate tournament in the nation," said Omar Guevara, CSUB's director of forensics.
The National Debate Tournament this year will be held March 27-April 2 at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The top 64 teams nationally are selected to compete at the National Debate Tournament.
Commenting on the success of the team, Guevara said that qualifying a team to the National Debate Tournament for the second consecutive year "solidifies CSUB Debate's rise to the upper echelons of West Coast college debate." He also noted that the success is even more remarkable since the program is now only in its third year since being reinstated. The forensics program was disbanded in 1992 due to budget cuts, Guevara said. It was reinstated in fall 1998.
