Cal State L.A. Professor Receives $90,819 Two-Year Business Grant from the U.S. Department of Education

California State University, Los Angeles' marketing professor Linda Beamer (San Gabriel resident) has recently been awarded a grant of $90,819 for the second year of a two-year award by the U.S. Department of Education for strengthening international business programs at Cal State L.A. and developing export education programs for area businesses.

The San Gabriel Valley Business and Trade Center is the partner for this project, and the grant amount is matched by approximately $90,924. As the principal investigator, Beamer is responsible for developing and delivering a joint-venture course that involves student consultants working with companies in Southern California (proposed by Rick Hayes, CSULA Accounting Department), delivering a pilot program for internationalizing business incubators (with Mary Pat McEnrue and Laura Whitcomb, CSULA Management Department), and developing a Foreign Trade Zone program for the San Gabriel Valley (proposed by Ashish Vaidya, CSULA Economics and Statistics Department).

The project includes product promotion to the Pacific Rim by area businesses, business student internships abroad, and travel fellowships for three to four faculty members for a study tour in Latin America.

Linda Beamer, who received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, is an expert on intercultural business communication. She teaches management communication to graduate students and business communication to undergraduates. She has co-authored a book on intercultural business communication, as well as more than 20 articles and papers. Beamer teaches intercultural business communication to managers from America to other countries, such as China.
