Beginning next fall, California State University, Stanislaus plans to offer a degree program leading to a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice.
The program's dual emphasis grooms criminal justice educators at the community college and university level, and offers staff development for those in criminal justice and human service agencies.
The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice will begin accepting applications in February, with priority given to applications received by April 1, 2001. Admission to the program will be competitive.
Unique in the CSU system, the program may be completed by full-time students in two years and by part-time students in three years. Selected courses will be offered at CSU Stanislaus-Stockton.
President Marvalene Hughes expressed appreciation to the University's friends in the community who supported the faculty in securing approval of this program. She emphasized that this newest master's degree program builds on the University's excellent undergraduate degrees.
Provost Richard Curry praised the faculty's creativity in designing a program that emphasizes applied research for studying critical criminal justice issues in the region.
Graduate Dean Diana Demetrulias said she expects the program to draw a cohort of at least 20 students for the Fall 2001 semester.
Arts, Letters and Sciences Dean Mary Cullinan emphasized that this program is built on high academic quality and responds to the strong need among students and the community.
