Cal Poly Dairy Products Judging Team Wins Regional, National Contests

Cal Poly's Dairy Products Judging Team beat out 20 entries recently to win the National Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest, held recently in San Francisco.

The competition tests students' ability to grade and score six different dairy products, including butter, ice cream, milk, cottage cheese, yogurt and cheddar cheese. Each student judges 48 different samples for appearance, flavor and body and texture. Students compete as individuals and as three-member teams.

Team members were Marcia Bugbee, a senior agribusiness major, Renee McLaughlin, agricultural science junior, and Sarah Renner, dairy science junior. The three members are all residents of Fontana.

Casey Griffith, a junior dairy science student from Ferndale, served as the alternate.

Joan Lozano, a dairy science graduate student from Dinuba, competed as the graduate representative.

In individual placings, Bugbee was first in cheddar cheese and second in yogurt, Renner was third in yogurt and fourth in ice cream, and McLaughlin was third in cheddar cheese.

As individuals in the All Products category, Renner was third, Bugbee fourth and McLaughlin fifth. Lozano finished third in All Products in the graduate student competition.

The team won first in All products and finished first in milk, yogurt and cheddar cheese, third in butter and ice cream, and eighth in cottage cheese.

Cal Poly competed against teams from such universities as the University of Wisconsin, Kansas State, Ohio State, Penn State, South Dakota State, and the universities of Alberta and Manitoba.

In September, the Cal Poly team won first in the All Products category of the Midwest Regional Dairy Products Judging Contest in Illinois. Ten teams competed in the contest.

The team is coached by Dairy Science faculty member William Gillis.

The national contest is sponsored by the American Dairy Science Association, the Foundation of the International Association of Food Industry Suppliers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
