Cal State L.A. undergraduate Jeanette Contreras (La Puente resident), a political science major in the pre-law program option, has been awarded a Pat Brown Institute Public Policy Fellows Internship in the office of State Assemblymember Gil Cedillo. Contreras has a special interest in the workings of local agencies and political processes and in the crafting of legislation.
After a three-month summer assignment with Assemblymember Cedillo, on recommendation of the Pat Brown Institute, she will become the University's first placement in the Panetta Institute's Congressional Fellowships at CSU Monterey Bay, from September through the November elections.
As such, she will take a public policy course taught by Leon Panetta, former U.S. Congressman, Director of the Budget, and White House Chief of Staff, followed by placement with a congressional office in Washington, D.C. during the election period.
Contreras is one of three Public Policy Fellows whom the Pat Brown Institute has placed under its summer internship program. The others include Sunny K. Lu, a UC Berkeley undergraduate in social welfare and psychology, a Palos Verdes Peninsula resident, placed with Assemblymember Alan Lowenthal, and Arina Hayrapetyan from the University of Texas, Dallas, whose placement is with U.S. Congressman Xavier Becerra.
The purpose of the Institute's internship program is to expose students to applied experience in public policymaking, various policy networks, and potential careers in public service. For more information regarding the Public Policy Internship Program, call the Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute at Cal State L.A., (323) 343-3770.
