CSUS Student wins Steve Irwin Scholarship.
Laura Filbeck Bates of Cameron Park, CA and Junior at CA State University Sacramento has been awarded the Down Under Answers Steve Irwin Scholarship.

Down Under Answers recently announced Laura Filbeck Bates as the successful applicant for a Steve Irwin Scholarship, which was been set up to carry on Steve’s legacy at the Australia Zoo, support his Wildlife Warrior charity and continue his passion for the world’s wildlife and environment.

The scholarship gives Laura the chance to walk in Steve Irwin’s footsteps and learn more about Australia’s unique wildlife. The journey, which Laura will embark upon in January 2008, will be her first-ever international trip. Laura, an avid animal lover will not only spend time at the Australia Zoo, but as part of her scholarship will spend time at Tangalooma Wildlife Dolphin Resort of the coast of Queensland, the Kingfisher Bay Resort on World Heritage Fraser Island and O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat in Lamington National Park. These unique experiences will introduce Laura some of Australia’s natural wonderlands and truly bring to light the passion Steve Irwin had for his homeland.

Down Under Answers, a Wholesale Travel company specializing in travel to Australia sent the scholarship announcement to all of their travel agent partners nationwide at the beginning of 2007 and received many very inspiring entries, making the decision a tough one for the judging panel, consisting of representatives from Tourism Australia, Tourism Queensland and Down Under Answers. Aussie Specialist PREMIER, Matt Knowles of Sea Escape TRAVEL has known Laura for 8 years and knew her passion for animals and her never fading dream of going to Australia would make her a strong candidate for the scholarship, so encouraged her to send in a proposal. Matt has also been instrumental in planning her trip downunder.

With Steve Irwin Day rapidly approaching on 15 November, Laura set up her own Backyard Campout Webpage to raise money for Australia’s Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, an organization established in 2002, by Steve & Terri Irwin, as a way to include and involve other caring people to support the protection of injured, threatened or endangered animals.
