TELACU's Lizárraga to receive honorary doctorate at Cal State L.A.
David C. Lizárraga, for more than three decades the chairman and chief executive officer of The East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU), will receive an honorary doctoral degree at California State University, Los Angeles's Undergraduate Commencement Saturday. The ceremony begins at 8 a.m.
Born of immigrant parents whose religious mission led them to help the poor, Lizárraga attended East Los Angeles College and Cal State L.A. before embarking on a career as a social worker, activist and, ultimately, a corporate promoter of the community.
In conferring the degree, the California State University Board of Trustees cites Lizárraga's leadership guiding TELACU to become the largest community development corporation in the United States as it has helped build affordable homes, created jobs, and provided funding to families and small-business entrepreneurs. The citation also credits Lizárraga's vision with fostering the regeneration and empowerment of the East Los Angeles community.
According to the board, "As founder of the LINC TELACU Education Foundation, which provides annual scholarships and support to more than 600 Latino students, Lizárraga has proved an outstanding partner to the California State University, helping CSU students realize their dreams at campuses throughout the state."
He has served on the boards of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the New America Alliance and, most recently, as chairman of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which represents more than 2 million Hispanic businesses throughout the country.
Others who have received honorary doctorates at Cal State L.A. Commencements include former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin, legendary "Stand and Deliver" math teacher Jaime Escalante, actor and alumnus Billy Barty, tennis great Billie Jean King, pianist/vocalist Michael Feinstein, former Congressman Edward R. Roybal and, posthumously, CSU Trustee Claudia Hampton.
