Desert Healthcare District Gives Another $1 Million Toward CSUSB'S Palm Desert Campus Building Construction

The Desert Healthcare District in the Coachella Valley has awarded California State University, San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus a second $1 million grant for construction of the Palm Desert Campus’s Health Sciences Building. The agreement was signed in late January by CSUSB President Albert K. Karnig and DHCD Chief Executive Officer Wayne Soucy.

“This is a great boost to our building program at the Palm Desert Campus,” said Karnig. “The Desert Healthcare District has demonstrated generous and consistent support for health education in the Coachella Valley.”

A previous grant of $1 million made it possible for the campus to begin the architectural planning for the building, for which administrators hope to break ground this year. The campus retained HMC Architects of Ontario, Calif., to design the structure.

“The new building is closely aligned with the District’s strategic plan to help alleviate health workforce shortages in the valley, especially in the area of nursing,” according to Sid Rubenstein, president of the DHCD Board.

The Desert Healthcare District also voted to offer another $1 million to the university as a challenge grant. This amount will be given to PDC only if, by Aug. 31, the university raises $1 million in matching funds from the three acute-care hospitals operating in the Coachella Valley—Desert Regional Medical Center (Palm Springs), Eisenhower Medical Center (Rancho Mirage) and John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital (Indio), and/or donations through their affiliated foundations.

“We’re very pleased with the Desert Healthcare District’s generous support for the final phase of our campus’s current construction,” said Fred Jandt, PDC dean. “This brings us very close to our goal, which will soon allow us to proceed with the building.”
