CSULB Co-ed Cheer Team Takes Top Honors at USA Collegiate Cheerleading and Dance Nationals

For the third time in four years, the co-ed cheerleading team at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) captured top honors in its division at the United Spirit Association's (USA) Collegiate Cheerleading and Dance Nationals, which are held in Las Vegas, Nev.

Overall, it was the cheerleading team's sixth overall title at the USA national event.

"I thought the team did a phenomenal job, especially when you consider that this is a rebuilding year for us," noted CSULB Cheer Coach Eric Anderson. "We went into the competition with mixed feelings about how we would do, but we just wanted to do our best, and every last member of the team really stepped it up. It was just amazing, and they were winners by a landslide. No one else was even close."

The 32-member squad competed in the Small Co-ed Show Cheer (4-Year School) Division for the first time at the 2006 competition and easily outscored second-place Idaho State University and third-place Mesa State College in Colorado to earn the national championship. In all, there were about a dozen teams competing in the division.

"The cheer team's routine is constant entertainment. There's always something going on with squad member tumbling, doing basket tosses and building pyramids," said Beach Pride Coordinator Chance Decker. "From beginning to end, our team pushed through with a very fast-paced, clean routine. When you combine that with no mistakes, you get a winning combination."

"We had a clean routine but we also added a lot to it. It definitely wasn't boring," said Katherine Covellone, cheer team captain. "Part of the routine has a song from Marilyn Manson where we didn't just dance, we yelled with it and got the crowd on its feet. We really brought down the house."

Members of this year's championship-winning cheer team include Crystina Anderson, Meagan Bergman, Courtney Bonner, Sasha Carranza, Lorena Castaneda, Covellone, Christine Crafton, Gail Davis, Casey Dolliver, Michelle Duenas, Michele Fishberg, Cody Glen, Ailene Gonzalez, Emily Harlan, Kellie Jeffery, DeShaunte Johnson, Tiana Johnson, Staci Knode; Jennifer Kubo, Travis Ledbetter, Monique Mance, Kylie Mar, Lindsay Noon, Rebecca Peng, Christi Phillips, Samiah Phillips, Kiellie Richardson, Elisa Sabes, Alyson Schiffmacher, Sabrina Shaw, Tammy Sohl, Brittany Swinford, Monique Wahrenbrock.

While the cheer team came away with the top award at the 12th annual event, it was not the only CSULB squad to collect an award as the university's stunt team grabbed second-place honors in the College Group Stunt competition. The all-girl stunt team consisted of Bergman, Crafton, Davis and Sabes.

In addition, the CSULB Dance Team finished fourth in the Small Open College Dance (4-Year School) Division of the event.
