Lyles Center at Fresno State Offers Support for Student Entrepreneurs

The Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at California State University, Fresno, in partnership with the Coleman Foundation, has two programs that give support to students in college and high school. One of the offerings, the Scholarships in Entrepreneurship program, has a Dec. 1, 2005, application deadline for spring 2006.

The Scholarships in Entrepreneurship program provides high school and community college students with an existing business who enroll at Fresno State, the opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial spirit. Three students will receive $10,000 each for supporting their education and expanding their business while in school. Student enrolling in spring 2006 and fall 2006 are eligible.

Selected students can use the funds toward tuition, student housing and books. Incorporated into the scholarships, students will be provided with office space in the new Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s “Hatchery,” an area where students receive mentoring, access to resources, a complete office and access to facilities at the Lyles Center such as a board room and classrooms. The deadline for spring 2006 applications is Dec. 1, 2005. Applications for fall 2006 must be submitted by May 1, 2006.

The annual student business plan competition awards students from Fresno State with $10,000 in prize money. First through third place winners of the competition will receive cash to be used in the development of their businesses and will receive one of the eight office spaces in the Lyles Center Hatchery. Competitors must be a team with at least one member who is a student enrolled at Fresno State. The deadline for applying to enter the business plan competition is March 31, 2006, and the final competition will take place on April 29, 2006.

The Coleman Foundation has provided the seed funding to launch both programs. The private and independent foundation was established in Illinois in 1951 by the estates of Dorothy W. and J.D. Stetson Coleman. Entrepreneurship is one of the foundation's main areas of interest.

As one of the leading entrepreneurial centers in the United States, the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship located at Fresno State, assists both students and community members in pursuit of their entrepreneurial goals.
