San José State University Names New Executive Director of the Alumni Association

Derrick P. Morgan has been named executive director of the San José State University Alumni Association. Morgan will oversee the association staff and 22-member volunteer board of directors. Among his responsibilities are increasing membership, expanding the events and programs being offered, and improving the public relations and marketing outreach to SJSU alumni.

"With nearly 13 years in marketing and sales to his credit, Derrick Morgan brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience to SJSU," said Fred Najjar, associate vice president, Development and Alumni Relations. "We are very fortunate to have him join our team. I have no doubt that he will be a great asset to SJSU as we seek new ways to serve our more than 200,000 graduates and the broader SJSU community."

Morgan comes to SJSU from Lubbock, Texas, where he served as the associate vice president of marketing at the Texas Tech Alumni Association. At Texas Tech, he was responsible for a $2 million annual membership budget, and for the past four years, managed a staff of five that was in charge of both marketing and public relations for the organization. Prior to that, Morgan was membership development representative for Texas Tech Alumni Association, in Dallas, where he generated revenue for new and renewal association memberships, facilities gifts, special events and projects.

Morgan has a BBA in marketing and graduated cum laude from Texas Tech University. He is a member of the Client Advisory Council for Bernard C. Harris Publishing Company; founder and president of the Gamma Tau Alumni Association of Theta Xi; and has served as a committee member and volunteer of the Texas Tech University Intercollegiate Rodeo.

San José State is one of the largest public-sector employers in Silicon Valley, with about 3,200 full-time and part-time employees and an annual budget of $407 million (2004-05).
