Cal State L.A. is #1 in Awarding Master's Degrees in English to Hispanic Students

California State University, Los Angeles was recently ranked #1 in the nation in the number of master’s degrees awarded in English Language and Literature/Letters to Hispanic students. The July issue of Black Issues in Higher Education special edition, “Top 100 Graduate and Professional Degree Producers 2004,” published this ranking, which focuses on the top 100 institutions that conferred graduate degrees during the 2002-2003 academic year.

Also listed in the discipline categories, Cal State L.A. was among the top ten in awarding master’s degrees in Education to minority, Hispanic and Asian American students, and is the top-ranking public institution in California awarding master’s degrees in all disciplines combined to Hispanic students.

Additionally, Cal State L.A. ranked #4 in awarding master’s degrees in Area, Ethnic, Cultural and Gender Studies to Hispanic students, #14 in awarding master’s degrees in Physical Sciences to minority students, and #14 in awarding master’s degrees in English Language and Literature/Letters to minority students. Overall, Cal State L.A.—one of only two CSU campuses ranked among the top 25 in the nation—was listed #21 in awarding master’s degrees in all disciplines combined to minority students.

Black Issues defines minority student categories as Black, non-Hispanic; American Indian or Alaskan Native; Asian or Pacific Islander; and Hispanic. The Black Issues lists are drawn from information collected by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics.
