CSU Library Administrators in National Leadership

Rod Hersberger, Dean of Libraries at CSU Bakersfield, has been elected treasurer of the American Library Association (ALA) for a three-year term beginning in July 2007. The 67,000-member ALA is the oldest and largest library association in the world, and the treasurer is the second highest elected position. As treasurer, Rod will be a member of ALA's Executive Board and Executive Committee. Congratulations, Rod!

Dr. Gordon Smith, Director of Systemwide Library Initiatives in the CSU Office of the Chancellor, has been appointed to the National Policy Council, a broad-based organization providing leadership in establishing standards for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy. The chief objective of their work will be to determine what students should know and be able to do at each ICT literacy level. The important work of this group will undoubtedly set the stage for curricular improvements. Thank you, Gordon, for representing the CSU!

Michael Gorman, retired Dean of Library Services at CSU Fresno, served as president of the American Library Association in 2005-2006. In summer 2007, he completed his term as member of the ALA Executive Board. Reminiscing on highpoints of his term, Michael says, "I was glad that my term of office culminated in the 2006 Annual Conference in New Orleans…and to play our part in the beginning of the recovery of that storm-wracked city and region."
