A valuable resource for facilitating academic success at two- and four-year colleges in California

Are students able to solve information problems using credible and relevant information? Most faculty would respond in the negative. San José State University library faculty member Susan Klingberg is seeking solutions to this dilemma with the development of the Checklist of Information Competencies for College Students, an intersegmental resource that identifies the core information competencies students need for academic success. The Checklist was developed by a team of librarians from the CSU and the California Community Colleges. Contributors included Pam Baker at CSU Monterey Bay, Bonnie Gratch-Lindauer at City College of San Francisco, and Topsey Smalley at Cabrillo College. The late Ilene Rockman in the CSU Chancellor's Office served as a consultant. In January 2007, it received formal endorsement by the California Community Colleges System's Council of Chief Librarians.

Susan organized a program on the Checklist at the 2006 Loex of the West conference and in March 2007 at a California Academic and Research Libraries (CARL)-sponsored conference. She published an article for Reference Services Review (Vol. 34, no. 4, 2006) detailing the process for developing the Checklist titled "Information Competencies Checklist: a Resource for Inter-segmental Collaboration. "The originality of the project," notes Susan, "is its collaborative nature and its success in advancing inter-segmental cooperation in California public higher education" (2006).
