Lynn Lampert

Prolific author and presenter, expert on plagiarism and information literacy

Lynn Lampert, Chair of Reference and Instructional Services and Coordinator of Information Competence at CSU Northridge, engages in action research that has a far-reaching impact. Lynn's rich research agenda focuses on discipline-based approaches to embedding information literacy into curricular objectives and the role that libraries and librarians can play in combating plagiarism. Why engage in information literacy research? In her words, "Information literacy programming is a very big component for helping students understand why their studies matter in terms of the information seeking habits they develop during the course of their studies…"

Articles on the challenges of plagiarism abound in the literature. Lynn, who has presented and written extensively in this area, provides thoughtful approaches to address the problem. In a paper presented at LOEX of the West in 2004, she posits that librarians are ideally situated to work with students and faculty in the discipline specific (style, format, rules, ethics) standards that help educate students about how they can avoid plagiarism through proper citation and attribution. That paper was later published in Reference Services Review. Lynn's success resulted in an invitation to speak at the prestigious American Library Association (ALA) 2005 midwinter meeting. In late 2005, she was invited by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) to develop and present a 1.5-hour webcast on the role of the librarian in combating student plagiarism. The popular webcast has reached national and international audiences.

Lynn is working on two book projects: Combating Student Plagiarism: An Academic Librarian's Guide, of which she is the sole author, and Proven Strategies for Building an Information Literacy Program, co-edited with Dr. Susan C. Curzon. She authored a chapter in that work on the importance of understanding curricular cycles in efforts to embed information literacy into campus wide curricular programs such as general education or writing programs. Her astounding record of applied research ultimately paves the way for improvements in students' academic success.
