Alumni Advocates of the Year
Rudy Bermúdez California State University, Long Beach
Rudy Bermúdez has served the people of California by promoting public safety,
improving the education of students and championing the rights of working
men and women. A law enforcement officer by profession, Bermúdez was
first elected to represent the 56th district in the California State Assembly in
November 2002.
Prior to that, Bermúdez was an active council member in the City of Norwalk,
the 15th largest city in Los Angeles County with a population of more than
100,000 residents. Recognizing his strong commitment to public education and
his successes in the legislature, the California State University system and the
Faculty Association of the California Community Colleges have both named
Bermúdez as their Legislator of the Year.
Bermúdez started his undergraduate degree at CSU Long Beach, successfully
completing his first year as an Educational Opportunity Program student and
then transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles to complete his
sociology baccalaureate degree. He was in the legislature when he completed
his master’s degree in public policy and administration in 2004.
