1. List no more than 4 goals:

    A. To give students an undergraduate-level introduction to the problems and issues of historiography.
    B. To teach students the basic strategies and tools of historical research.
    C. To teach students the fundamentals of scholarly historical writing.

2. List no more than 4 measurable objectives:

    By the time their B.A. degree program in history is completed, all history majors:

    A. Will be able to identify and analyze fundamental problems of historical interpretation.
    B. Will be acquainted with at least some of the various "schools" of historical analysis that address these problems.
    C. Will complete at least one major research project in which they learn to select a research problem, search for and find the relevant original and secondary sources available and analyze and interpret these sources.
    D. Will complete at least one major research essay using standard scholarly apparatus such as notes and a bibliography.

3. How will the objectives be measured? (be specific and succinct)

    A. Recently-graduated history alumni and currently enrolled senior history majors will be surveyed this semester to obtain their perspective on the successes and failures of the History B.A. program at CSU Northridge.
    B. History majors' written work in the required reading and research courses (History 301, History 497, and History 498) will be randomly (and anonymously) sampled to evaluate their progress and achievement in the areas of historical reading, research, writing and the understanding of the issues of historical interpretation and analysis.

4. Method of feedback of assessment results. How will the department/ program use the results?

    A. The results and the assessment program, itself, will be evaluated at a "retreat" tentatively scheduled for May or June, 1997.
    B. In addition, the results will be included in the current Program Review process.
