Overview
The CSU Institute for Teaching and Learning invites requests for funding from CSU campuses that wish to offer regional CSU faculty development workshops based on successful workshops offered at one of the ITL Teacher-Scholar Summer Institutes. Unfortunately, ITL cannot accommodate all faculty who wish to attend the annual TSSI, and these regional workshops will give faculty a second chance in an easy-access, low-cost forum. We encourage campuses to form regional consortia to jointly sponsor workshops, but we do not require this for geographically isolated campuses. We also encourage you to announce the workshops over the FDC listserv and to accommodate faculty from other campuses on a space-available basis. We recognize that campuses may need to modify the TSSI workshop agenda or may invite different workshop leaders. In such cases, the campus should provide an explanation with their request for funds. In addition, based on a suggestion at the June 2001 CSU Faculty Development Council meeting, we will consider funding "pilot" TSSI workshops, i.e., one- or two-day workshops that you create that might be suitable for a future TSSI. We particularly encourage the development of workshops that are interdisciplinary in focus, that are staffed by CSU faculty, and that respond to critical, system-wide faculty needs concerning teaching and learning.
Funding the Workshop
ITL will contribute, for each regional workshop (minimum enrollment of 20), a stipend for the workshop presenter(s) (maximum of $500/day for each presenter and $1,000/day for each workshop). ITL also will provide funds to reimburse workshop leaders for travel, lodging, and meal expenses, following CSU travel guidelines. If workshop leaders request higher stipends, the sponsoring campus(es) may supplement the ITL contribution with their own funds or funds raised from charging a participant registration fee. Other costs associated with offering the workshop (materials, room rental, refreshments, etc.) are the responsibility of the campus(es) and may be defrayed by charging a registration fee. Faculty participants will be responsible for paying or securing campus support to cover any registration fee and travel expenses they incur to attend a workshop. We do not anticipate funding more than one workshop per involved campus, i.e., a three-campus consortium could be funded for up to three workshops.
Campus Responsibilities
Campuses will be responsible for all preparations for CSU Regional Teacher-Scholar Workshops: applying for ITL funds, scheduling, coordinating with workshop leaders, coordinating workshop leader stipends and travel reimbursement, announcing the session, recruiting participants, collecting any fees, preparing materials, sending instructions and information to participants, and arranging for facilities, refreshments, parking, etc.
ITL Support
ITL will provide contact information for workshop leaders and templates for end-of-workshop evaluation forms and goals statements. To assist with recruiting participants, ITL can provide contact information for faculty who may be especially interested in learning about a regional workshop (those who requested workshops at TSSI and were denied enrollment because the workshops were full).
Workshop Follow-Up
We request that workshop organizers send to ITL, at the end of the workshop, a roster of participants (names and campuses), a summary of the evaluation survey, a copy of the participants' statements of goals or plans for implementing workshop ideas, and a brief report on the workshop (what worked, what didn't, recommendations for change, etc.). If the sponsored session is a TSSI "pilot," we request your honest appraisal of its potential for a TSSI workshop. We have found that TSSI participants particularly appreciate well-organized presentations, leader flexibility and responsiveness to questions, multiple opportunities to discuss issues with colleagues and to reflect on ideas, handouts that summarize and expand ideas, references for follow-up review, and effective time management.
