Where to Stay in San Luis Obispo
Participants must make and guarantee their own room reservations
at one of the many inns and motels in San Luis Obispo. ITL has arranged
for a block of rooms to be set aside for Teacher-Scholar participants
at several inns, all in the same area, on Monterey Street, and about
3/4 mile from campus. Rates range from around $60 to over $130 per
night, depending on the inn and the type of room.
See our where to stay in SLO list
for phone numbers, room rates, and further details. Most of the inns
will release the ITL block of rooms for sale to the general public
after May 24. Please see Travel Expense
Reimbursement for additional information on funding available
from ITL to help defray your lodging costs.
Meals
Lunches and refreshment breaks Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and
receptions and dinners Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday are included in
the TSSI 2001 registration fee. Please indicate when you register
which days you will be present for dinner, and if you have any dietary
restrictions. Dinner on Sunday includes a welcome reception and brief
program; dinners Monday and Tuesday will also include programs. All
lunches and dinners will be on campus, with lunches close to the workshop
meeting rooms and dinners in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion.
Most of the motels and inns offer a continental breakfast, and those
who prefer to purchase a full breakfast will find several options
at cafes on Monterey Street near the inns.
Transportation to San Luis Obispo
For most, carpooling or driving to San Luis Obispo will be the most
convenient, but the city has an airport and is also on the Amtrak
Coast
Starlight and Pacific
SurfLiner routes. Travel by train is recommended for those who
are looking for an economical, leisurely trip through interesting
and beautiful countryside. For example, the northbound Coast Starlight
leaves Los Angeles' Union Station about 9:30 AM and arrives in San
Luis Obispo around 3:00 PM. From Sacramento, the southbound Coast
Starlight leaves about 6:30 AM and arrives in San Luis at 3:30 PM.
Airfares to SLO are high, with most flights connecting through San
Francisco or Los Angeles.
Transportation in San Luis Obispo
Most of the motels and inns in SLO will pick guests up at the airport
or Amtrak station. Taxi service in SLO is extremely limited. The motels
and inns where ITL has blocks of rooms set aside are about 3/4 mile
from the entrance to campus. (See map of campus
and town).
All workshops will be held on the Cal Poly campus. ITL will offer
shuttle bus service between the motel cluster and campus in the mornings
before the workshops, in the late afternoons after the workshops,
and in the evenings, to and from dinner, for those who do not wish
to walk. Participants may purchase campus parking permits and drive
from their inn to campus. The city bus service also runs from the
motel area to campus. Be sure to let ITL know if you have special
needs or requests for in-town travel assistance.
