Since the new political dispensation began in 1994, South Africa has made a remarkable transition. Its constitution, which underlines the country's political and legal systems, is widely acknowledged as one of the most progressive in the world. The country has a vigorous multi-party democracy with an independent judiciary and a free and diverse press. South Africa's attempts to overcome centuries of racial inequalities in favor of reconciliation have been internationally recognized as a major political achievement.
Slightly less than twice the size of Texas, South Africa (pop. 42,000,000) boasts eleven official languages: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Pedi, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, and Zulu. To help the students gain a greater understanding of the South African culture, IP students, depending on which university, will enroll in one of the regional languages each semester.
Recently, the universities in South Africa have undergone a great deal of restructuring through institutional mergers and what we find today are new universities that have resulted from these mergers. The CSU International Programs is affiliated with two universities in South Africa: The University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban (D) and Pietermaritzburg (PM), and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth (NMMU).
