Ghana: Overview

Ghana, formerly the British colony of the Gold Coast, was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain its independence from European colonial rule. Today, Ghana is a constitutional democracy and a model of development for the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. Covering an area of approximately 92,100 square miles, it is just over half the size of California. The population of 22 million is divided into about 100 ethno-linguistic groups, the largest of which is the Twi-speaking Akan.

Modern Ghana offers California students vast opportunities to experience first-hand its rich cultural heritage of traditional chiefs, ethnic festivals and tropical rainforests.
