According
to the American Association of Port Authorities, the amount
of cargo shipped by water is expected to triple by the year
2020. The
California Maritime Academy is critical to helping build
a strong workforce. Cal Maritime is one of only seven degree-granting
maritime academies in the country. Its students enjoy a
nearly 100 percent job placement rate. With an average time
to graduation rate of four years, Cal Maritime students
enter the workforce and begin contributing to the economy
earlier than their counterparts.

The California Maritime Academy’s annual impact on the Bay
Area region is significant.
Annual spending related to Cal Maritime in the Bay Area
region ($35 million) generates a total impact of nearly
$62 million on the regional economy. This impact sustains
more than 850 jobs in the region, and generates more than
$3 million per year in tax revenue. Even greater—more
than $7.5 million of the earnings by alumni from Cal Maritime
are attributable to their CSU degrees.

The Pacific Ocean plays a crucial role in the state’s identity,
quality-of-life and economy. The Institute for Maritime
Technology Research and Analysis (IMTRA) at Cal Maritime
provides applied research, analysis and planning for the
implementation of emerging and future maritime technologies.
IMTRA monitors and develops emerging, state-of-the-art maritime
systems, and assists the maritime industry with the selection
of maritime technology systems.
