HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY
STRENGTHENING TEACHER EDUCATION IN THE UNDERGRADUATE YEARS
CAMPUS ACTION PLAN

GENERAL

1) Creation of a Department of Education. At the present time, we have fragmented units without a coherent structure responsible for teacher education. We intend to combine these units into one: a Department of Education. (Fall 1997)

2) New Identification. Within the Department of Education we intend to change the names of our programs to more accurately reflect our programs: Liberal Studies Elementary Education, Teacher Preparation Elementary Education, Teacher Preparation Secondary Education. (Fall 1997)

LIBERAL STUDIES ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

3) Theme-Based Approach. The Liberal Studies Elementary Education Program will be revised around a theme-based approach in order to provide greater focus for issues related to elementary education. This theme-based approach will result in the development of an integrated program for prospective elementary school teachers. (Spring 1998)

4) Living and Learning Program. Working in conjunction with residence hall personnel, a living and learning program will be implemented for freshmen students desiring to become teachers. (Fall 1998)

5) Peer Advising Program. To create a greater sense of identity and camaraderie, a peer advising program will be developed for students majoring in Liberal Studies Elementary Education. (Spring 1998)

INTERNAL INITIATIVES

6) Development of Three-Year Plan. A retreat for all education faculty will be held to develop this year's plan for the direction of the new Department of Education. (Spring 1998)

7) Collaboration with University Administration on RTP Policies. By working with the College Deans and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, procedures will be developed to institute broad institutional support for Teacher Education. (Spring 1998)

8) Faculty Appointments. After an analysis of program needs, more faculty will be hired for elementary and secondary education programs. In addition, collaborative discussions between college deans will result in joint appointment in teacher education and subject matter disciplines. (Spring 1998)

9) Release Time. Faculty will be provided release time to write documents leading to new certificate and credential programs. (Spring 1998)

EXTERNAL INITIATIVES

10) Community College Activities. Renewed emphasis will be placed on cooperation with our local community college regarding recruitment of students for our liberal studies elementary education program. (Spring 1998)

11) County Office of Education. Renewed emphasis will be placed on collaborative efforts with the Humboldt County Office of Education to recruit elementary school teachers. (Spring 1998)
