Strengthening Teacher Education in the Undergraduate Years Conference
Action Plan Summary

Team Members: Norma S. Rees ( President), Arthurlene G. Towner ( Dean, Education), Leigh Mintz ( Assoc. V.P., Curriculum and Academic Programs), James Zarrillo ( Chair, Teacher Education) and Thomas Hall (Assoc. Direc., Liberal Studies)

Focus of Action Plan: It was agreed that we would pursue the development of an articulated/blended program focusing on Liberal Studies and the Multiple Subjects Credential. This would include articulating upper division English, history, mathematics and science courses with their corresponding Teacher education courses in 1999. Such a blended program would constitute the initial phase of a plan toward the creation of an integrated undergraduate sequence of coursework. The next phase would be determined during subsequent planning discussions with the academic departments.

Role of Team Members: Leigh Mintz, Associate Vice President for Curriculum and Academic Program was designated to assume the LEAD role in implementing the action plan. An Integrated Program Planning G roup ( IPPG) is to be convened during Winter'98. It shall include faculty representatives from the conference team, as well as additional faculty members from the academic departments and teacher education and the Director of the Liberal Studies Program. The charge of the group is to prepare a draft report in Spring '98; consult with the community colleges in Fall 1998 and implement the integrated program in Winter'99.

Others to be Involved: Additional individuals to be consulted in the development of the integrated program are the Deans of the schools of Science; Arts, Letters and Social Sciences, as well as Education; liberal studies students, community college faculty and K-12 colleagues.

Mechanism for Involvement: A regional meeting with representatives from community colleges and K-12 districts in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties shall be convened to shared the proposed plan and to obtain feedback.

Immediate Follow-up After Conference: The members of the team that participated in the San Diego conference attended the Fall Council on Teacher Education meeting, our all university responsibility for teacher education body, to present a report of the conference and to obtain initial reactions to the proposed plan. Copies of all of the documents distributed at the conference were also shared for background information and in preparation for additional discussions in subsequent quarters.
