Chico Summary

Strengthening Teacher Education in the Undergraduate Years
CSU, Chico Action Plan Summary

CSU, Chico's Conference Team consisted of:

Sara Armstrong--Vice Provost
Carolynn Reynolds--Associate Dean, College of Communication and Education
Bill Martin--Liberal Studies Coordinator
Katy Gould Anderson--Director, Education Services Center
Devon Metzger--Faculty, Multiple Subject Program

The team determined the following would need to occur to effect changes. Where these have begun, a statement follows each indicating the course of action undertaken.

  • Identify the group of faculty who were in the best position to effect the needed changes and encourage the participation of other faculty.

The School of Education Executive Committee has met to discuss the changes that might be necessary throughout the school. Faculty or other departments which might want to become involved also have been suggested. This area will need specific action as the directions of change become clearer.

  • The RTP document must reflect the value placed on participation at the K-16 level. Faculty must be rewarded for their efforts in these areas.
The President has awarded PSSIs to faculty who have demonstrated involvement in the K-16 arena and the University-wide Faculty Personnel Policies and Procedures Document specifies "credit" toward RTP for such participation.

  • Other significant Community groups must become involved.

Several faculty from various Departments on the campus already are members of various community agencies and/or serve on committees in various capacities. In addition, members of various agencies serve on committees of the University. This is, however, an area for greater growth and participation.

  • To encourage greater participation of on and off campus partners, a plan of rewards must be developed, a sense of empowerment to effect changes must be developed, better communication must be targeted. Media attention must be directed toward the positive outcomes.

Upon its return, the following steps were taken:

The Vice Provost prepared and delivered a summary report of the conference to the Provost and his Council of Academic Deans.

The Associate Dean reported the conference summary to the Dean of the College of Communication and Education.

The MS faculty member from the Department of Education shared his perceptions with the chair of the Department of Education.

The Director of the Education Services Center shared a report with the chair of the Department of Professional Studies in Education.

The Coordinator of the Liberal Studies Program has been in communication with many of his program faculty.

The School of Education Executive Committee has begun to prepare a draft of an Education Minor which might be targeted at several populations (academic major-Multiple Subject, Single Subject, other "service" professional fields, other career fields).

Because the Dean of the College was an active and important member of both the 1422 Commission and the Chancellor's Task Force, the Administration at this campus is well advised of the changes taking place in the field of Teacher Education both at the Legislative level and with the CSU System.

The whole campus has, as part of its Strategic Plan, identified candidate and program assessment as a top priority.

The 1998-99 Review of Graduate Programs in Education will reflect and focus on programmatic self-assessment and candidate assessment.

The School of Education Reading faculty has been active in the redesign of preparation programs and courses in anticipation of the RICA.

The School of Education has been preparing its Accreditation response to the Commission in light of all the factors indicated above while remaining aware of the critical need for competent teachers throughout the State.
