California Tourism Highlights, 2008 Data, published by the California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC), indicates that California has the largest market share of domestic travel among all 50 states with a market share of 11.1 percent in 2007. Over 13 million international visitors also travel to California each year.

2008 highlights include:

  • Total leisure visitor volume increased three percent in 2008 as gas prices fell in the second half of the year.
  • During 2008, travel spending in California directly supported 924,000 jobs with earnings of $30.6 billion.
  • Travel spending generated the greatest number of jobs in accommodation and food services (533,000) and arts, entertainment and recreation (227,400 jobs).

In California Fast Facts, Fall 2006,* also published by CTTC:

  • Dining, shopping and entertainment are the most popular Expenditure-based activities among California travelers. Sightseeing, followed by [visits to] theme and amusement parks, and [then]beach and waterfront activities are the most popular recreational pursuits.
  • The multi-billion dollar travel industry in California is a vital
    part of the state and local economies. The industry is represented primarily by retail and service firms, including lodging establishments, restaurants, ... and other types of businesses that sell their products and services to travelers.
