Jack Acosta has been an influential civic and business leader whose distinguished contributions have enriched California State University East Bay, the California State University and the citizens of California.
As an exemplary civic leader and advocate for education, Mr. Acosta has been active in support of the university's regional stewardship goal in providing access to high-quality public higher education for East Bay citizens. An accomplished alumnus, Acosta earned his bachelor of science in Business Administration and an MBA from California State University, East Bay (then Hayward) in 1975 and 1978, respectively. He has served on the Cal State East Bay Educational Foundation Board of Directors since 2004, and currently is the board's secretary and member of the Executive and Investment & Finance Committees, and chair of its Audit Oversight Committee. As a Contra Costa County resident, he also serves on the university's Concord Campus Advisory Board.
Mr. Acosta, recognized for his advocacy of education, has worked tirelessly with community and educational associations supporting student access and success. Mr. Acosta, with his wife, Susan, has continued to be a benefactor of California State University, East Bay.
He has enjoyed a storied career as a highly successful and distinguished business leader. Through his astute operational and financial management acumen, he was instrumental in the growth and development of several prominent national and international companies. His previous business leadership roles include Executive Vice President and CFO of both Sybase, Inc. and Portal Software; President and Chief Operating Officer and Director, Tanon Manufacturing, Inc.; Executive Vice President and CFO, Ungermann-Bass, Inc.; and Director of Operations, Atari, Inc. Although "retired," Mr. Acosta continues to remain active in business through service as a member on several boards of directors. Currently, he is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of SumTotal Systems, Inc., and a board member of Integral Development. Previously, he served on the Board of Directors of Docent, Inc.
In recognition of his support of higher education and his civic and professional accomplishments as a community and business leader, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, East Bay are proud to confer upon Jack Acosta the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
