Special Collections at the San Diego State University Library house approximately
60,000 volumes, 500 manuscript collections, and 500,000 other items such as photographs,
art prints, postcards, memorabilia, scrapbooks, etchings, and oral histories. Subject
strengths include early astronomy and other sciences, orchids, surfing, popular sheet
music, John F. Kennedy, Edward Gorey, postcards, science fiction, zines, comics, and
San Diego history. Early printed works include 13 books before 1501, over 200
16th-century imprints, and 1,000 17th-century imprints.
