San Francisco State University
The Graduate Experience
San Francisco State University is one of the largest graduate degree-granting universities
within the CSU system and also in the state of California. There are approximately 6,000
students enrolled in postbaccalaureate study at San Francisco State in 95 master's programs,
three joint doctoral programs with the University of California, and education credential
and specialized certificate programs. Forty-two percent of its graduate students are ethnic
minorities. San Francisco State ranks first in the nation among master's granting institutions,
enrolling international students from 95 countries.
Graduate students engage directly with faculty in the humanities and social sciences
and work side by side with faculty in laboratories, music and art studios, movement and
exercise physiology units, hospitals, schools, museums, film and sound editing centers,
and in business program classrooms housed in downtown San Francisco close to the centers
of business, finance, and hospitality.
Student Success
San Francisco State offers programs of study that reflect contemporary scholarly standards
within the disciplines and that address regional needs for advanced-level professionals in
the fields of business, science, health, social services, and education among others.
Examples of student success are:
- Creative arts graduates have won not only Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe, Grammy,
and Peabody awards but also Theatre World awards. Alumni have received Oscar nominations
for the past seven consecutive years.
- Students from diverse backgrounds are engaged in scientific research activities
leading to PhD programs in science and technology fields.
- The SFSU Poetry Center is one of the most respected literary resource centers in
the nation. Its video and audio collection of writers reading in performance is among
the largest in the world.
- San Francisco State offers a nationally ranked joint doctoral program in physical
therapy with UC San Francisco and nationally ranked programs in public administration
and creative writing. Focused study in special education is offered through a joint PhD
with UC Berkeley.
- In fall 2007, San Francisco State will launch an independent EdD in Educational
Leadership, pending CSU approval and WASC accreditation.
- Graduate degrees in ethnic studies and Asian American studies are offered by the
only College of Ethnic Studies in the nation.
San Francisco Campus
San Francisco State is located on a 94-acre site near Lake Merced in southwestern San
Francisco. The main campus achieves a park-like beauty amid the city life that surrounds
it. The university operates off-campus study centers, including the Romberg Tiburon Center
on San Francisco Bay, the Sierra Nevada Field Campus, and the SFSU Downtown Center. |
