The Graduate Experience
San Francisco State University is one of the largest graduate degree-granting universities within the CSU system and also in the state of California. There are approximately 6,000 students enrolled in postbaccalaureate study at San Francisco State in 95 master's programs, three joint doctoral programs with the University of California, and education credential and specialized certificate programs. Forty-two percent of its graduate students are ethnic minorities. San Francisco State ranks first in the nation among master's granting institutions, enrolling international students from 95 countries.

Graduate students engage directly with faculty in the humanities and social sciences and work side by side with faculty in laboratories, music and art studios, movement and exercise physiology units, hospitals, schools, museums, film and sound editing centers, and in business program classrooms housed in downtown San Francisco close to the centers of business, finance, and hospitality.

Student Success
San Francisco State offers programs of study that reflect contemporary scholarly standards within the disciplines and that address regional needs for advanced-level professionals in the fields of business, science, health, social services, and education among others. Examples of student success are:

  • Creative arts graduates have won not only Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe, Grammy, and Peabody awards but also Theatre World awards. Alumni have received Oscar nominations for the past seven consecutive years.
  • Students from diverse backgrounds are engaged in scientific research activities leading to PhD programs in science and technology fields.
  • The SFSU Poetry Center is one of the most respected literary resource centers in the nation. Its video and audio collection of writers reading in performance is among the largest in the world.
  • San Francisco State offers a nationally ranked joint doctoral program in physical therapy with UC San Francisco and nationally ranked programs in public administration and creative writing. Focused study in special education is offered through a joint PhD with UC Berkeley.
  • In fall 2007, San Francisco State will launch an independent EdD in Educational Leadership, pending CSU approval and WASC accreditation.
  • Graduate degrees in ethnic studies and Asian American studies are offered by the only College of Ethnic Studies in the nation.
