Update on CSU Education Doctorate (Ed.D.) Program

  • The Trustees will receive an update on the CSU Education Doctorate, which was implemented in 2007. The Doctorate of Education degree offered by the CSU is focused on preparing administrative leaders for California public school districts and community colleges, as well as providing the knowledge and skills needed by administrators to be effective leaders for California public schools and community colleges.

  • The initial group of students will be completing their third year and over 100 are projected to earn their Ed.D degree by this summer. Eleven campuses offer the program which serves a total of 576 students. Of those students, 333 are preparing to be P-12 educational leaders and 243 are preparing for community college leadership positions. The program is also very diverse and boasts an exceptionally low attrition rate of just 5 percent.

  • Trustees will hear a report from the CSU Select Committee on Mental Health detailing the appropriate level of mental health services necessary to address student needs, and to review and identify the resources necessary to provide those services. The 14-month long study includes perhaps the largest compilation of data on student mental health needs and includes eight key recommendations which are unanimously supported by committee members.

  • The Committee was created in early 2009 and is composed of members of CSU campuses in a variety of positions.

arrow Math and Science Teacher Initiative

  • The Trustees will receive an update on the CSU Mathematics and Science Teach Initiative (MSTI), a program that has increased the production of math and science teachers by 80 percent since its inception.
  • In 2004, the Chancellor established a goal for the CSU to double its mathematics and science teacher production to address critical state needs. CSU has implemented a strategy to expand preparation of outstanding math and science teachers and has received national recognition for the success of the program.
