Meet the 2010 Awardees
Sonoma State University
Brandy Janelle Harris comes from a single-parent home, where her mother struggled to provide necessities for her family. While in high school, she raised money by selling parking spaces at local football games and requested donations so she could take a trip to a famous civil rights site. The phrase "ordinary people can do extraordinary things" has inspired and motivated Brandy to further her education and given her the strength to face the challenges of racial discrimination. Currently a junior at Sonoma State University, Brandy is an engineering science major and holds a 3.63 cumulative GPA.
At Sonoma State, Brandy found her niche and new "family" by reaching out to campus organizations such as Blacks Scholars United, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Join Us Making Progress (JUMP) and the athletics department. She has packaged food for shelters in the community at Redwood Empire Food Bank, tutored children at Evergreen Elementary and shared her experience at Sonoma State as an African-American woman.
Brandy plans to become an engineer and become a role model for other young women with similar aspirations.
