Meet the 2010 Awardees
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Patricia do Carmo grew up adapting to new environments, cultures and languages. Her parentsí desire of a better life for her and her brothers required that they move several times from their home in Brazil. Despite the lack of continuity, she never wavered in her commitment to education and, as a single mother, became the first in her family to earn a bachelorís degree. Patricia is now at Cal Poly Pomona working toward her masterís degree in English with an emphasis on teaching English as a second language.
Patricia has presented at conferences, helped organize a campuswide cultural event at a community college, participated in volunteer projects and became a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society—all while maintaining a 3.95 GPA. She balances her commitments and her daughterís needs and is extremely proud of raising a child who values education and diversity.
Patricia plans to combine her experiences and education to help students develop communication skills, understand cultural diversity and, above all, achieve their educational goals.
