Karen Martinez
CSU Monterey Bay

Language presented the first obstacle Karen Martinez had to overcome when her family migrated to California. However, she succeeded, graduating from high school as a member of the National Honor Society. Family responsibilities continue to present a challenge: Following the death of her older brother, she is now the oldest sibling and takes care of her younger brothers. The child of agricultural workers and the first in her family to attend college, Karen finds finances an increasing challenge, especially with a younger brother now following her ambitious path and attending CSU Monterey Bay.

Currently a sophomore at CSU Monterey Bay, Karen intends to major in math and earn a teaching credential and has made the Deanís List both semesters. She has tutored at the middle school she attended, serves as a mentor at the Boys and Girls Club, and volunteers at her church on Sundays.

She plans to become a math teacher so she can give students like her the opportunity for a better life.
