Meet the 2010 Awardees
CSU East Bay
As a second-generation refugee, Qais Ahmadi has served as his familyís interpreter in official affairs for most of his life, acting as a bridge between two cultures. Faced with the challenges of following his faith in a foreign land and helping to support his family, Qais succeeded in his studies with the support of the EXCEL program at CSU East Bay, graduating with a 3.68 GPA and a bachelorís degree in English. He is currently pursuing a masterís degree.
Encouraging young Afghani-Americans to pursue education has brought great satisfaction to Qais. Giving back to EXCEL as a mentor and tutor to students in need, he is developing the skills necessary to make an impact in his homeland.
Having never been to his native country of Afghanistan, Qais works hard to keep a strong relationship with his culture. After graduate school, he plans to teach transitioning immigrants English as a second language and to volunteer as a teacher in Afghanistan.
