Meet the 2010 Awardees
Adopted and raised by his grandmother, Tyree A. Boyd-Pates grew up in a low-income neighborhood. The possibility he would attend a university was unlikely: Resources and positive male role models did not exist. Even the devastating impact of the loss of his mother in 2008 could have deterred him academically, but he persevered.
Today, Tyree is a senior at CSU Bakersfield majoring in communications with an emphasis in public relations and a minor in African American Studies. He has worked in CSU Bakersfield’s University Outreach Office as a student ambassador and master of ceremonies during orientations for audiences of up to 1,000 students. Tyree has also been in four theatrical productions, is a vice president of Black Men on Campus and has served as a volunteer on weekends teaching computer literacy to at-risk youth—all while maintaining a 3.40 GPA.
Tyree plans to work toward a master’s degree in mass communications and media while continuing to provide inspiration to urban youth to help them pursue their educational dreams.
