Meet the 2009 Awardees
Rachel E. Grider was born blind but has never let that stop her. A music major at CSU Stanislaus, she is pursuing a double concentration in vocal performance and music composition and holds a 3.57 GPA.
Rachel is involved in church and community service activities, has received several scholarships, and has received recognition for her talents at recitals, competitions and solo exhibitions. She also participated in an adult skiing program for the handicapped and traveled to Beijing with the Olympics Orchestra. Rachel currently volunteers her time to the Visually Impaired Persons Support Center in Modesto.
Rachel has been a past recipient of the CSU systemwide Dale M. Schoettler Scholarship for Visually Impaired Students. She plans to pursue her doctorate in music and perform and compose classical music as well as teach composition or voice at the university level. Encouraged by her mother, she believes that "nothing in life is impossible to handle. . .even when it may be, at times, difficult to see."
