Tanisha Washington
CSU Long Beach

Attending college and earning a bachelor's degree is a dream come true for Tanisha Washington and her family. After her father's sudden death, Tanisha, her two siblings and disabled mother lived in poverty and, at one time, lived on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. Even through the toughest times, education remained a central family value.

Tanisha maintains a 3.9 GPA and is a senior at CSU Long Beach majoring in management information systems with a special emphasis in applications development. She volunteered at the Office of Special Service's High Tech department where she used translation software to convert mathematics textbooks into Braille for visually impaired students. Her team recently won the CSULB Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship's Challenge by creating shoes made out of plastic grocery bags. She hopes to turn this idea into a business that will help children in poverty and reduce overly full landfills.

Tanisha plans to work as a systems analyst at a large company and help others in need.
