Meet the 2009 Awardees
CSU East Bay
Andre Wilson has experienced tremendous hardships and overcome extensive obstacles in his life. At a young age, he was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and since then has fought and won the battle of alcoholism, drug addiction and homelessness. He has been sober for 22 years.
After seeing a billboard that read, "Education can transform your life," Andre enrolled in the Program for Adult College Education (PACE) and earned his associate degree in liberal arts from Berkeley City College in two years. In addition to his academic work, for the past 11 years Andre has gone with a team on Friday nights to feed Oakland's homeless.
With his first priority being his wife and family, Andre's new educational goal is to be the first in his family to earn a bachelor's degree; he will graduate in 2010 from CSU East Bay with a bachelor's degree in human development. His ultimate goal is to become the pastor of a thriving ministry and a tenured professor at the post-secondary level
