Meet the 2009 Awardees
CSU Dominguez Hills
Scarlett Aufmann not only faced the challenges of having an alcoholic parent, she is also a survivor of domestic violence, leaving a spouse who had substance abuse and mental health issues. Now a single mother of four boys, Scarlett is the sole supporter of her family, working full-time at Houston's restaurant.
Scarlett found success in higher education, earning Dean's Honor list status at Los Angeles Harbor College. She is currently a senior at CSU Dominguez Hills, working on her undergraduate degree in psychology. She has a 3.93 GPA and is a member of several honor societies.
Scarlett has been accepted in the McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, which helps low-income and first-generation students obtain a PhD. Her goal is to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology and to work as a professor at a research university. Her focus will be on helping children who have been affected by living in dysfunctional systems where domestic violence, abnormal psychopathology, substance abuse and alcoholism are present.
