Michael T. Walker
California Maritime Academy
Recipient, William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement
Growing up in a broken home, Michael Walker lived on welfare and supported himself during high school. He then served in the United States Navy and became a husband and father at an early age. Later, after his children graduated from college, Michael found himself a casualty of downsizing in his professional trade, and decided it was time to further his education. As an older student at California Maritime Academy, he is admired and respected by the younger cadets, who witness his dedication and maturity in pursuing academic excellence. Michael exhibits leadership on campus by volunteering as a squad leader and making Maritime Academy’s Business Day a success, while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.76. He serves as an example for those who want to better themselves through education, regardless of their age or background, and is grateful for the instruction and academic honors he has found at Cal Maritime.
