Recipient, William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement
Born in Torrington, Wyoming, Sandra Howery realized her true passion after graduating from high school and working for several years as a nursing assistant. Discovering that she liked the field of therapeutic recreation, Sandra decided to stop working and go back to school to obtain a degree. Despite rupturing a disc in her back during her first semester, Sandra continued to pursue her college degree. After 10 back surgeries over the course of 14 years, including four spinal fusions, she finally completed her A.S. degree. She is currently attending CSU Sacramento, pursuing a B.S. in recreation administration with a concentration in therapeutic recreation and a minor in gerontology. Sandra will graduate in May 2009, and plans to work for the Veterans Administration as a therapeutic recreation specialist. She aspires to be a role model for older adults and individuals with disabilities to further their education, as she believes that an education is the answer to many of life’s problems.
