California State University, Monterey Bay
Recipient, William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement
As a Mexican-American from a single-parent household, Mary Berube never expected to attend a university. She and her three brothers grew up in poverty while her mother held the family together by working two jobs and managing to keep the children out of childcare. Today, Mary is a junior majoring in earth systems science and policy with an emphasis in science and social justice. Her interest in the environment led her to participate in a variety of volunteer activities during her first year in college, and she has served at sustainability fairs and beach clean-ups, conducted lighting studies, and planned Earth Week events. Last year, Mary took a leadership role on campus by serving as environmental senator and chairing the CSU Monterey Bay Associated Students Environmental Committee. She also organized community service activities, all while maintaining a 3.3 GPA. Mary plans to put her degree and experiences to use by working as an environmental scientist.
